Week 2 Finals Wrap Up

September 15th 2008 07:27
Western Bulldogs def Sydney by 37 points.

The Western Bulldogs have booked themselves a match against Geelong next week after it defeated Sydney by 37 points at the MCG on Friday night.

By using their far superior leg speed, the Dogs were able to run around the Swans in the second half, and extend their half-time lead.

Keeping Sydney goalless in the third term whilst booting five goals, also helped set up next week's Preliminary Final encounter with the Cats.

Matthew Boyd played an instrumental role across the ground, gathering 33 touches and applying six tackles. Lindsay Gilbee was also influential with 28 possessions. Robert Murphy led the goal count with three majors, and Nathan Eagleton, Josh Hill and Scott Welsh all finished with two.

As for the Swans, Brett Kirk had 22 disposals and Jarrad McVeigh 20. Barry Hall booted four goals.

St. Kilda def Collingwood by 34 points.

St. Kilda will meet Hawthorn next week after it punished Collingwood by 34 points at the MCG on Saturday night.

The Saints had an extermely accurate night, only missing four times during the whole match. On the other hand, Collingwood had a woeful time around goals, and it was their inaccuracy that ultimately cost them the match.

Setting up St. Kilda's victory was a six-goal third quarter, in which they kept their opponents to only a solitary major on the scoreboard.

The Pies had a better finish to the last quarter, but it wasn't enough to close the gap and continue on in Season 2008, as the Saints marched on into the third week of the finals.

Nick Dal Santo was the best player on the night, collecting 32 possessions and kicking a goal. Leigh Montagna also contributed solidly with 29 touches. Captain Nick Riewoldt kicked five goals for his side and Stephen Milne and Justin Koschitzke booted three each.

Koschitzke will have a nervous wait to see whether he will play as he was reported for rough conduct with Shane Wakelin.
