Saturday Wash-Up

June 9th 2008 01:00
Adelaide def Richmond by 50 points.

A sublime second-half has seen Adelaide come back after trailing by 14 points at the main break, to win by 50 points at the final siren.

The win was set up with a 15-goal to five half, in which Scott Thompson kicked six and Luke Jericho kicked five (four in the third term), and a newly-formed forard line missing Brett Burton due to suspension.

For the third time in as many weeks, Richmond has had the lead at the main break, but has seen their opposition come back at them in the third term.

Bernie Vince got 30 possessions and Tyson Edwards 28 for the victors to set up the victory. They also kicked three and two goals respectively.

For the Tigers, Nathan Brown got 34 touches and kicked four goals in an impressive display. He was backed up by Brett Deledio and Chris Newman, who amassed 30 possessions each.

Sydney def West Coast by five points.

Having led by six goals at half-time, the West Coast Eagles have let their lead slip away to see their archenemy Sydney claim all four points with 84 seconds to spare and win the game by five points.

Keeping the Swans goalless in the first term, it looked like the Eagles were going to run away with the game. But an Adam Hunter high-hit on Jude Bolton produced a free kick 35 metres in front of goal, and slotted home the winner.

Nick Malceski starred for the victors with 28 possessions and two goals, accompanied by Tadhg Kennelly with 25. For the home side, Daniel Kerr led the way with 23 possessions and two goals. Kerr's partner-in-crime Dean Cox got 26 hitouts, and was a strong influence in the game.

Hawthorn def Essendon by 51 points.

In another dominant perfornce, Hawthorn has smashed Essendon to the tune of 51 points at the Telstra Dome.

The match was evenly poised going into the main break, with only seven points, in favour of the Hawks, the difference between both sides. An upset almost looked on the cards.

But a ten-goal to four third term stopped any glimmering hope Bombers' supporters had of seeing their team claiming all four points, as Luke Hodge, Chance Bateman and Lance Franklin clicked into another gear.

Supported by Sam Mitchell, the Hawks were a far superior squad, and spoilt the 250th-game celebration that the Bombers had in mind for Scott Lucas.

Franklin kicked nine majors and Jarrad Roughead, three, as the Bombers were left mesmerized as to who to play on both lethal forwards. Jordan Lewis picked 28 possessions and Bateman 23, whilst Hodge had a successful return from hanstring injury with 22 touches.

For the Bombers, Nathan Lovett-Murray was the biggest possession winner on the night, with 27 touches from the defensive 50. Brett Stanton amassed 26 and Scott Lucas celebrated his 250th with three goals, in a solid performance for his team.
