August 31st 2008 11:39
Richmond def Melbourne by 80 points.
Richmond has demolished Melbourne by 80 points at the MCG and claimed ninth position on the AFL ladder.
This win meant that the Tigers won eight of their last 11 matches, but just missed out on making this year's finals' series.
Kicking away in the second term by scoring six goals to one, Richmond never looked in trouble after that point. They also booted six in the final term to close out thirteen-goal winners.
Joel Bowdon amassed 34 possessions and three goals in a dominant display on the field. Chris Newman supported him with 30 touches. Brett Deledio kicked four goals.
As for Melbourne, Cameron Bruce collected 25 disposals and Adem Yze, in his last match for the Demons, gathered 25 touches. The other final-gamer, Jeff White, kicked two goals.
St. Kilda def Essendon by 108 points.
St. Kilda has defeated Essendon by 108 points and claimed fourth position from Adelaide.
The Saints needed to win by at least 95 points to steal the position away from the Crows, and started on the right track by kicking five goals in the opening term.
Stephen Milne was instrumental in his side's victory with seven goals for the match - six came after half-time.
Keeping Essendon to only three goals after half-time whist booting 13 of their own helped secure the big winning margin, guaranteeing Saints' fans - and Robert Harvey - at least two finals' matches.
It was a disappointing day for the Bombers, as they could not send their retiring players off with a proper send-off.
Brendan Goddard accumulated 30 possessions and Lenny Hayes 29. Nick Riewoldt kicked four and Jason Gram three, including 27 touches.
As for the Bombers, Sam Lonergan and Adam Ramanauskas got 23 disposals each and Jason Johnson 22 and only had individual goalkickers.
