Rivers' season gone downstream

Melbourne defender Jared Rivers has declared his season over with serious groin and stomach problems, seeing him rest up for a fresh start in 2009.
The 23-year-old was struck down by the injury against the traditional Queen's Birthday clash with Collingwood almost three weeks ago, and has not recovered since.
Initially set to only miss four-to-six weeks with the mysterious injury, the Demons thought it best to let the 2004 NAB Rising Star winner miss the rest of the season.
Unless there is a magical cure for him, I don't think he will be back playing football this year," Melbourne coach Dean Bailey said.
"It is really disappointing for Jared because he has got some great leadership qualities in him."
Bailey revealed that the groin is not the major issue with Rivers, but more the stomach troubles.
"The stomach muscles were the real concern this time," Bailey said. "The scans of the groin and everything were still good - as good as the could be.
"It was more the surrounding stomach muscles that were the concern.
"He's still 23 years of age. It's almost like he's been around 10 years.
"He should end up having 150 games next to his name."
Rivers' season-ending injury adds to the woes down at the club, with forward Russell Robertson also out for the season with foot troubles. Also add the sudden retirement of David Neitz, and the situation gets worse.
