Rd 6 AFL Saturday Wrap-Up

April 27th 2008 01:37
Just in case you missed the results to yesterday's matches, here is a quick summary of who beat who.

Adelaide def. Carlton by 30 points.

Adelaide came to Melbourne with the aim of stopping Carlton's two-game winning streak. They knew that for this to happen, captain Chris Judd and star forward Brendan Fevola, would need to be shut down - or minimise their influence in the game.

And this they did. At times, the Big Fev was double or triple-teamed, and his influence on the match was restricted to 1.3. Judd was hard-tagged by Robert Shirley, limiting what he could do with the ball.

Adelaide did not have it all their own way, being down by 10 points at the main break and lacking fluency in their faorward movement. Mid-way through the third term, the Crows kicked four goals in six minutes to devastate the Blues, and run out victors by five goals.

Western Bulldogs def West Coast by 60 points.B]

The season has gone from bad to worse for West Coast as the Western Bulldogs handed the Eagles a ten-goal belting at Telstra Dome.

The 'Dogs came out firing, kicking to a handy lead at quarter time, but when Michael Braun snapped away in the second quarter, the margin was reduced to only two goals.

After this, it became the Bulldogs' show. Their contested possession was unheralded, scrapping for everything. Jason Akermanis became a strong target up forward, kicking 4.2, and tackling ferociously.

The game was broken open in the third quarter, with the Bulldogs restricting the Eagles to only one goals, whilst they kicked eight goals, ultimately running out ten-goal winners.

Star midfielder Daniel Kerr may be in trouble for headbutting a Bulldogs player. More to come in next few days.

[B]Port Adelaide def St. Kilda by 21 points.

In cold and slippery conditions, Port Adelaide came out to play against the Saints, who were looking to consolidate their position in the top eight. The Power had better ball control and possession, and took a 20-point lead into the quarter-time break, even though it took more than 18 minutes for Daniel Motlop to kck the first major of the match.

After this, St. Kilda could not catch up.

The match turned into a real match in the thrid quarter with Nick Riewoldt gradually starting to exert some influence. But it was his opposite number in Warren Tredrea who played a bigger inflence, alongside Motlop. Between them, they kicked five goals to see the Power make it two on the trot.

Kane Cornes did a superb job tagging Saints' midfielder Nick Dal Santo, limiting the damage he could have done.
