Brisbane def. St. Kilda by points
Brisbane has cemented its place in the top half of the ladder with a convincing 46-point victory over St. Kilda at the GABBA.
The Lions set up the win with a six-goal to one secodn quarter and seven-goal to three third term, and stretched the margin as far as 75 points at one stage throughout the match. St. Kilda closed the gap by kicking eight goals to four in the last stanza, but it wasn't enough, as the Lions roared home.
Jonathan Brown and Daniel Bradshaw were a destructive force up front of Brisbane, as they each kicked six goals. Jed Adcock (30 touches), Simon Black and Josh Drummond (28 each) were unstoppable in the midfield, as the Saints had no answer to the Lions' domination.
Justin Koschitzke kicked four goals for the visitors, and succumbed the Saints to their second loss in a row.
Hawthorn def. Melbourne by 19 points
Hawthorn remains the only team not to lose so far this season after it defeated Melbourne by 19 points at the MCG.
Going into the match knowing that a win would assure them top spot after Geelong's demolishing at the hands of Collingwood, Hawthorn knew that the last-placed Demons were not going to be a pushover.
They were also playing for David Neitz, who had decided to retire from football after a serious neck injury. And Melbourne wanted to put in a good performance for their former captain.
Hawthorn were stunned in the opening half, not expecting Melbourne to be so competitive against them. It was the Dees that led at the end of both quarters, by six and nine points respectively.
But the Hawks turned it on in the thirs, kicking the game open with six goals compared to Melbourne's three, and wound up 19-point winners at the final siren.
Sam Mitchell got 32 possessions and Chance Bateman 28, whilst for Meelbourne, Brock McLean got 30 touches (20 in the first half) and Matthew Bate 29.
Ben Holland, Lance Franklin, Cyrill Rioli and Mark Williams each kicked three goals for their sides.
The win sees Hawthorn record its best-ever start to a season, even better than when it dominated in the 1980s.
North Melbourne def. Western Bulldogs by three points
It is every child's dream: kicking for goal to win the match after the siren. But sometimes, it can end in disaster, as happened to Brad Johnson against the Kangaroos at Telstra Dome.
With only two seconds on the clock, Johnson narks the ball 30 metres out, and is forced to take the kick after the hooter. But instead of the fairytale ending, he succembs and puts it through for a behind, costing his team victory by an agonising three points.
The Bulldogs led by four goals at half-time, and thought that they would run away with the match, but it wasn't to be, as North kicked five in the third term to the Doggies three. It set up for a thrilling finish.
Down by 24 points early in the last quarter, North rallied and hit the front by four points late in the fourth quarter, and eventually won by three points, to give the Bulldogs their first loss of the season, and a missed opportunity to leapfrog Geelong on the ladder.
Brent Harvey kicked two goals in his 250th game. His partner up forward in Nathan Thompson kicked four, and Adam Simpson and Hamish Macintosh got 28 and 27 disposals respectively.
For the Dogs, Adam Cooney got 33 touches and Matthew Boyd 30, whilst Jason Akermanis kicked four goals.
