R8 Sunday Wrap-Up

May 19th 2008 08:37
Adelaide def. Melbourne by 76 points.

Adelaide has cemented fourth spot on the AFL Ladder by demolishing Melbourne by 76 points at AAMI Stadium yesterday.

The Crows began their demolition with an eight-goal first term, and from there, just stretched their lead out further, kicking seven in the final term. Led by Brett Burton (five goals) and Kurt Tippett (four), Neil Craig's squad had winners all across the ground.

Youngsters Bernice Vince and Nathan van Berlo amassed 29 and 27 possessions respectively. For Melbourne, Cale Morton kicked three goals and Russell Robertson two.

Even though he did not play during the match, David Neitz announced his retirement from the game, after 15 seasons of representing the red and blue. He has not been in form this season, and has been suffering with injury throughout his career, especially neck pain

Sydney def. Essendon by 91 points.

Sydney has handed Essendon their third-straight 10-goal belting, as the Swans gave the Bombers a 91-point lesson at Telstra Stadium in Sydney.

A seven-goal second term, and six-goal third quarter set up the match for the red and white, as Essendon could not match the Swans firepower.

Michael O'Loughlin starred for the Harbour City side, with six goals and 19 possessions. Brett Kirk was dominant, amassing 29 possessions, and dual-Brownlow Medallist Adam Goodes backed up his Hall of Fame Tribute Match performance with another stellar match, getting 27 touches.

The Swans shut down the Essendon forward line, sometimes playing two or three men on Bomber capatin Matthew Lloyd. With poor delivery into Essendon's forward 50, and swift clearances out of defence, Sydney looked the likely winners early on.

Western Bulldogs def. Fremantle by three points.

The Western Bulldogs have defeated Fremantle by three points in a thriller at Subiaco, and kept alive their unbeaten start this season.

Both teams kicked six gals each in the first quarter, and the match hung in the balance, with the lead changing on many occasions. It wasn't until the Dockers kicked five goals to two in the third quarter, that the game began to open up.

But the Bullldogs did not give up, and kicked six goals in the last quarter, with Scott Welsh kicking the winner.

Chris Tarrant and Matthew Pavlich kicked four goals each for Fremantle, whilst Jason Akermanis and Robert Murphy kicked three each for the visitors.
