R8 Saturday Wash-Up

May 18th 2008 01:38
Hawthorn def Port Adelaide by 15 points.

In what was seen as the game of the round, Hawthorn have come from behind to defeat a spirited Port Adelaide outfit by 15 points at Aurora Stadium.

Down at one stage by 38 points - and the TAB backing the Hawks at $3.00 to make a miraculous comeback - Hawthorn slowly picked up their game, and their ferocity at the ball, and clawed their way to victory.

Led by Lance Franklin, who kicked 6.2, Jordan Lewis (36 possessions) and Brad Sewell (34), the Hawks booted seven goals to the term, to see them hit the front late in the third term. When Franklin marked in the goal sqaure and kick his sixth for the day, Hawthorn were out to a seven-point lead.

Shaun Burgoyne and Kane Cornes had good games, amassing 31 and 29 possessins respectively.

Forward Mark Williams may be in a little bit of trouble over his 'choking' celebration gesture towards his opposition's namesake. What will the AFL do?

Geelong def Richmond by 30 points.

In typical fashion this season, the Cats started off sluggishly against a determined Richmond side, wanting to prove a point that they are a quality team.

After only being up by a goal at half-time, Richmond could not keep up with the reigning Premiers, as Geelong began to pile on the pressure and step up their intensity, both on and off the ball.

In the third therm, the Cats kicked seven goals, to the Tigers one - five of which were unanswered. The writing was on the wall for the Tigers, as the Cats went about keeping their unbeaten start to the season intact.

Paul Chapman was the standout player for the Cats, with 24 possessions and four goals, and a strong return from injury by Gary Ablett (27 touches), proved to be enough to see Geelong home by five goals.

Brisbane def Carlton by 33 points.

Brisbane has defeated Carlton by 33 points under the lights at Telstra Dome. Inspired by Johnathan Brown, the Lions piled on the goals, going into quarter-time with a six-goal advantage. After this, the match was theoretically over.

The margin grew to 42 points at half-time, and 41 at the end of the third.

With the return of Johnathan Brown, Simon Black and Travis Johnstone from injury, Brisbane looked more confident with the ball. Their kicking was sharper, and targets were easily being spotted up forward.

Luke Power amassed 32 touches and the ruck-duo of Jamie Charman Mitch Clark has 39 hitouts between them. Johnstone had a stron return to the seniors with 32 possessions.

Whilst for the visitors, Brendan Fevola continued his scintillating form, kicking 5.4 and Heath Scotland racked up 39 touches.

Kangaroos def West Coast by six points.

North Meblourne have consolidated their position in the top half of the table with a deserving victory over the West Coast Eagles at Carrara.

Scores were tight all night, and when small forawrd Matt Campbell opened the gap up to seven points, the match was over, consigning the Eagles to their seventh-straight loss, one off their worst-ever record.

Only 6,500 people showed up to see this tight match, and were treated to a light works, when one of the light towers suddenly tourned off midway through the final term. The last eight minutes were played in partial darkness.

Adam Simpson starred for the Kangaroos, getting 26 touches, and David Hale got 16 possessions, 10 hitouts and three goals.

In Friday night's match, Collingwood defeated St. Kilda by nine points. The Magpies movement and effectiveness with the ball saw them come out on top at the Telstra Dome.

Without Nick Riewoldt and an out-of-form Fraser Gehrig, St. Kilda relied on Justin Koschitkze and Steven Milne to kick the Saints' score. The first two failed to fire, whilst Milne only kicked two. The majority came from their running midfielders.

Dane Swan (27 possessions) and Leon Davis (24, one goal) were influential, whilst Captain Scott Burns (22) was resolute for the black and white. Anthony Rocca returned for Collingwood, and provided another headache for the Saints' weakened backline.

Expect to hear Gehrig retire some time in the next few weeks, after St. Kilda Coach Ross Lyon attacked the ageing forward.
