R19 Saturday Wash Up

August 10th 2008 02:43
Carlton def Port Adelaide by 66 points.

Carlton has kept its finals' hopes alive with a 66-point thumping of Port Adelaide at the Telstra Dome.

But percentage may hurt the Blues as they were inaccurate in front of goal, kicking 18.24. They now sit in ninth position, just behind Brisbane, who lost to Hawthorn in Launceston.

Once the margin was 56 points at three-quarter time, Carlton switched off, and thought about next week's clash with North Melbourne.

Andrew Carrazzo had another high-possession game with 34 disposals, and Bryce Gibbs gathered 30. Brendan Fevola contributed four goals, and could have had more had be been more accurate. Andrew Walker also kicked three.

For Port, Kane Cornes and Peter Burgoyne dominated, getting 24 touches each and 13 tackles between them. Damon White was the Power multiple goal kicker, with three goals.

Hawthorn def Brisbane by points.

Hawthorn continues to put pressure on the Western Bulldogs as they notched up another win - this week, against Brisbane at Aurora Stadium.

Lance Franklin was the standout performer, with six goals in a low-scoring match.

With only four goals kicked in the opening half, the Hawks were able to accelerate away in the second half, kicking 13 goals to four. And Franklin was instrumental in this.

Shane Crawford also managed to kick the last goal of the game, in his 300th match. He racked up 28 touches, to make it a memorable day.

Luke Hodge was at his sublime best, with 31 possessions and Sam Miitchell with 29. But the day belonged to Franklin, with six goals. Cyril Rioli was his left-tenant, with three goals.

For the visitors, Brisbane's midfield was able to get their hands on the ball, with all four centremen getting at least 26 touches. Luke Power and Travis Johnstone topped the list with 28 each. Daniel Bradshaw was the major contributor on the scoreboard with two goals.

Collingwood def St. Kilda by 14 points.

Collingwood has managed to put behind them a week of turmoil and defeat St. Kilda by 14 points at the MCG.

The win also meant that the Magpies leapfrog the Saints, and go into six position, in the run to the finals.

Jumping out of the blocks early, Collingwood survived anything that St. Kilda threw at them, including a five-goal last quarter. St. Kilda did have something to play for - Robert Harvey's retirement from football at the end of the season, but were unable to match Collingwood's four-quarter effort.

Dane Swan and Leon Davis amassed 25 possessions each and kicked five goals between them. John Anthony was the only other player for the Magpies to kick a bagful, with three of his own. Alan Didak's replacement, Chris Dawes was lively up front, and finished with two goals including a goal with his first kick in senior football.

As for the Saints, Brendan Goddard got the ball 32 times, and Lenny Hayes 30. Robert Harvey in one of his final matches racked up 28 touches. Adam Schneider kicked three goals and Nick Riewodlt and Stephen Milne two each.

Sydney def Fremantle by four points.

A career-best eight goals from Adam Goodes has given Sydney a four-point victory over Fremantle at the SCG.

With only nine minutes to go, Freo were up by 14 points, but a missed opportunity by Luke McPharlin saw Sydney kick the next three goals and take the four points away from the Dockers.

The win keeps the pressure on the pack below them in the race for fourth position, in particular, North Melbourne, who play the Western Bulldogs.

Jude Bolton collected 30 possessions and two goals, supported by Tadhg Kennelly with 27.
Barry Hall returned to some form since his suspension with four goals.
