August 8th 2008 04:40
Essendon has the sweet smell of finals around the corner, and if they can win this week against the Eagles, they will have put themselves into a very good position come the end of the home-and-away season.
West Coast are without many of its first-team players, as they have gone into have surgery for the following season. Daniel Kerr is the latest to join an ever-growing list of Eagles.
But they can take heart from this, as they defeated St. Kilda only a few weeks ago at Subiaco by 17 points. And the Saints are still in contention to make it in September.
The Bombers have been rising like a phoenix in the last two months, coming from nowhere to all of a sudden be considered a chance in this year's Finals.
Matthew Lloyd returned to his vintage best last week with eight goals and quite possibly the Mark of the Year. His team-mates can take some heart that their skipper still has a lot of fight left in his ageing body.
Dean Cox and David Hille will shape the match immensely, as they are two of the in-form ruckmen in the competition. They are both leaders on the field, and will be looked toward for that spark that will enlighten their side.
