R13 Sunday Wrap Up

June 23rd 2008 06:27
[Sydney def Melbourne by 30 points.

A five-goal haul from superstar forward Barry Hall has seen Sydney win their sixth-straight game and cement themselves in the top four, overcoming a spirited Melbourne outfit at Manuka Oval.

The Swans had a 36-point lead at one stage during the second quarter, but the Dees were able to reduce it to 12 midway through the third term. They just ran out of legs in the last, and let the Swans build up their advantage to five at the final siren.

Hall's five goals was backed up by Amon Buchanan's and Michael O'Loughlin's two goals each. Brett Kirk led the way with 27 possessions and eight tackles, and Marty Matner supported him with 19 touches and five tackles of his own.

For the Demons, Brad Greene has 24 disposals, accompanied by Paul Wheatley with 19. Matthew Bate kicked four and NAB Rising Star Nominee Austin Wonaeamirri was lively up front with three.

Essendon def Carlton by 35 points.

After regaining its place in the eight for the first time in two years, Carlton has been upstaged by a determined Bombers squad by 35 points at the MCG.

The Bombers flew out to a 39-point lead at the end of the first quarter, and surprised the Blues with their ball movement and efficiency.

Carlton managed to gain the lead in the final term, but the young Essendon team showed their grint and wrestled back the lead, and extended the margin to nearly six goals.

The Blues were very Fevola conscious, attempting to pinpoint their forward at all times, but Dustin Fletcher did a good despite Carlton attempts.

Fevola ended the match with seven goals. Nick Steven amassed 30 possessions and Andrew Carazzo 27.

For the Bombers, Jobe Watson ended up with 27 touches, and Angus Monfries 25 including four goals in a best-on-ground performance. Matthew Lloyd also kicked four for the winners, who have managed to string two wins together.

B]Western Bulldogs def Collingwood by ten points.[/B]

In one of the games of the season, the Western Bulldogs have come out and stated their premiership intentions with a hard-fought ten-point over Collingwood at the Telstra Dome.

A close match was always going to be on the cards, with both sides having something to prove. The Magpies wanted to redeem themselves after losing last week to traditional rivals Carlton, and the Doggies wanted to show the AFL world that they were the real deal.

Despite leading by as much as 23 points midway through the third quarter, but all it did was spark the boys from the west alight. Proving that they had more run in the midfield, and more interchange options, the Bulldogs clawed back the deficit and won the match.

Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse called for the AFL to do something about the interchange bench numbers, as he had no fit players to substitute onto the field.

For the Pies, Heath Shaw racked up 31 possessions, including 11 marks and eight tackles. He was supported by Scott Pendlebury with 28. Dane Swan, Paul Medhurst, Cameron Wood and Scott Burns all kicked two goals each.

As for the victors, Mitch Hahn and Robert Murphy kicked three goals each and Lindsay Gilbee and Daniel Cross got 29 disposals each. Brownlow Medal favourite Adam Cooney finished the game with 27 possessions.
