R13 Saturday Wash Up

June 22nd 2008 01:11
North Melbourne def Hawthorn by 27 points.

Despite losing its last three matches, North Melbourne has come out and upset one of the ppremiership favourites in Hawthorn at the MCG.

The Kangaroos had a seventh man floating around dangerous Hawks forward and current leader of the Coleman Medal, Lance Franklin, and were able to limit his influence with his left boot. He was held to one goal by Josh Gibson, with Drew Petrie acting as a third man in the marking contest, whether in front or behind the 'Buddy' Franklin pack.

Sam Mitchell had a blinder of a match, with 38 possessions, boosting his credentials to win the Brownlow Medal at the end of the season, with teammates Jarryd Morton and Luke Hodge keeping their winning hopes alive.

But it was North's determination to turn their form around which stood out on the day. Daniel Harris racked up 32 possessions and seven tackles, Brent Harvey had 31 touches and four tackles and Lindsay Thomas helped seal the win with four goals - three in the last quarter, to take the four points back to Arden Street.

Richmond def Port Adelaide by four points.

Richmond has won its fifth game of the season and its second in a row, and ended Port's finals aspirations with a thrilling four-point win at AAMI Stadium.

A nine-goal fist quarter and seven-goal third term helped set up the victory, which was more pleasing for the coach and supporters, than the players. The tigers discovered two more attacking options up front, with Cleave Hughes booting six and Mitch Morton five, adding to their current crop of leading forwards Matthew Richardson and Nathan Brown.

But the Power didn't give up, and came back with a wet sail, keeping the Tigers to one goal in the last whilst kicking five of their own, bit it wasn't enough to see them win.

Joel Bowden came back to his best amassing 39 possessions, Shane Tuck got 32 and Nathan Foley 30.

For Port, Dominic Cassisi got 23 touches, but it was the boot of Daniel Motlop which kept the Power in it, with six goals.

Geelong def West Coast by 135 points.

Geelong has come out and absolutely smashed the West Coast Eagles to the tune of 135 points at Subiaco Oval.

The Cats did just as they pleased, with the Eagles meing there just to make up the numbers.

A seven-goal to one opening term and a ten-goal third term set up the victory, with the Eagles only managing to kick five goals at the match's completion.

Midfielder Gary Ablett firmed even more up as the Brownlow Medal favourite, with 37 possessions, six tackles and two goals. He was backed up by last year's winner, Jimmy Bartel with 28, and both Paul Chapman and Cameron Mooney kicking five majors each.

In a night with little positives for West Coast, Andrew Embley and Chad Fletcher racked up 28 touches, and Dean Cox with 25, 19 hitouts and one goal.

John Worsfold's men will have to have their kicking boots on, as they managed to score 17 behinds, so some kicking practice may be required during the week.

Brisbane def Adelaide by 13 points.

Brisbane has bounced back after last week's ten-goal belting at the hands of the Western Bulldogs to concede Adelaide to their second loss in a rown at the GABBA last night.

The match was a see-saw affair, with both teams jostling for the lead at all times. But it was the poor-finishing Crows which let them down. In the last term, they managed to kick two goals to Brisbane's four after leading going into the last stanza.

Not only did they surrender a three-quarter lead, but also a half-time one of 12 points.

For the victors, Luke Power got an amazing 40 possessions across the ground, being the dominant player on the night. He was supported by Jared Brennan with 31. Mitchell Clark booted three goals and Anthony Corrie and Jonathan Brown two each for the home side.

Whilst for Adelaide, Michael Doughty was impressive with 38 touches and Chris Knights 28. Jason Porplyzia was the only multiple goal scorer in a sad tale.

They will have a week off and take on the reigning premiers over at AAMI stadium.
