MAGPIES DOMINATE BOMBERS ON ANZAC DAY

April 25th 2008 07:26
Just under 90,000 fans have seen Paul Medhurst and Travis Cloke kick 11 goals between them as Collingwood demolished Essendon by 73 points during the ANZAC Day match between the two traditional rivals.

Alwyn Davey and Anthony Rocca did not come up for the match, and Nathan Lovett-Murray and first-gamer Sharrod Wellingham were the emergencies called in at the last minute to replace the duo.

The teams went goal for goal in the first five minutes, scoring two goals each. The Bombers’ Jason Laycock and Matthew Lloyd had goals equalised by Ben Johnson and Tarkyn Lockyer. Paul Medhurst kicked the next two goals in the first quarter to put the Magpies up, but Matthew Lloyd and Jay Nash scored majors for the Bombers to see them down by one point at quarter-time.

Collingwood kicked away in the second quarter, kicking six of seven goals in a dominant 15-minute display. The Bombers had a seven-point lead early on during the quarter when youngster Kyle Reimers kicked a goal, but let it slip as Collingwood’s game plan began to be executed.

Goals from Dale Thomas, Travis Cloke, Tyson Goldsack, Paul Medhurst, Tarkyn Lockyer and Dane Swan saw the Pies kick away to a 32-point lead. Angus Monfries had a kick at goal after the half-time siren to reduce the deficit, but sprayed the shot to the right for a behind, leaving the Bombers trailing by 31 points at the main break.

The third quarter started off with both teams making mistakes, as the ground started to get slippery. When Paul Medhurst kicked his fourth and fifth for the game, the margin had blown out to 52 points mid-way through the quarter. Collingwood kicked four goals to one to extend the lead out to 53 points. Essendon’s handballing-focused game through the middle of the ground had been no match for the long-kicking and effective passing of the Magpies.

Bomber Brent Stanton kicked the opening goal at the start of the last quarter, but Cameron Wood, Alan Didak replied with one each to extend the Magpies lead. When Collingwood’s number-one supporter, ‘Joffa’, put his infamous gold jacket on after Medhurst kicked his sixth for the game, the lead was 11 goals. The nail had gone in the Bomber coffin.

Ricky Dyson, Mal Michael and Lloyd reduced the margin to 48 points, bringing some respectability to an otherwise unforgettable day for the black and red. Cloke and Leon Davis kicked two goals each for the Magpies, sealing victory for the black and white.

Essendon’s fight was to no avail as Collingwood shook off poor last quarter performances that saw them lose against both the Kangaroos and Brisbane after leading at three-quarter time, and dominate Essendon, running out winners by points.

The Magpies lifted the ANZAC trophy and Medhurst received the ANZAC Day medal, adjudged best on ground by the panel after kicking 6.2 in a stellar performance.

Collingwood faces an undefeated Hawthorn next Saturday at the MCG, whilst the Bombers play Port Adelaide at Telstra Dome a day later.

FINAL SCORES:
Collingwood 23.16.154
Essendon 12.9.81
