Lucas reaches 250th
June 5th 2008 01:06
After having injured his knee in Round One this season, Scott Lucas was not thinking about racking up his 250th game for the Essendon Bombers. He was more than likely thinking about his 249th.
Against archenemy Hawthorn this week, Lucas will join the illustrious 250-game club. Coach Matthew Knights says that his team do not need any extra inspiration to perform against the Hawks, or for Lucas.
"I think he gave the side extra inspiration in his 249th, actually, just having him back out there," Knights said yesterday.
"Having him back in the side last week was enormous for us. They straight away put Nathan Bock on him, who might be All-Australian centre half-back, so that shows you the respect that Scott has around the league.
"It will be a fantastic occasion for Scott and the Essendon Football Club this week, because he's been a true champion of the club."
Lucas debuted for the Bombers in Round five 1996, where he racked up more handballs than kicks. Since then, he has kicked 432 goals for the black and red. One of his most famous performances was condemning West Coast to third position after he kicked seven goals in the last quarter.
The man himself isn't making much of the occasion, and his motivations became stronger as he got older.
"It's probably higher, the motivation – as you get older, I think there's the motivation to prove that you can still do what you did in your mid-20s," he said.
"Also, there's the motivation to see the club return to where you think it should be.
"I think it's easy when you're winning – it just becomes routine and habit, and you don't think too much about it, and you just roll along, but now everything's really up – the motivation, and looking over everything to make sure everyone's doing everything right, because of the need to, really."
