How many years: Fevola
May 15th 2008 01:34
It is of no surprise that superstar spearhead Brendan Fevola's contract is up renegotiation at the end of the season. What is in dispute is how many years the Blues are willing to sign him up for.
Having been read the riot act by Carlton earlier this year after an off-field incident, Fevola was sanctioned by the club and put on notice. Some officials believe that Fev should only be offered a one-year deal.
But hasn't his form on the field warranted more? Not wanting to play devil's advocate here, but Brendan Fevola has practically kicked Carlton into the position they are in this year. His boot has done the damage against the opposition.
It takes the team's best defender (sometimes more) to beat the Carlton forward at this sublime best. Why would the Blues even consider offering Fevola such a ridiculous contract?
Carlton coach Brett Ratten did his best to quash these rumours, by saying that he believes that Fevola will receive more than just a season.
"I think if we offer Brendan a contract it probably would be more than one year, but we'll just wait and see what comes out on the table," Ratten told The Age.
"We all know what he did earlier in the year and that's still hanging over his head, but as I've stated before, Brendan's done everything right by the team — he had that one incident — and his form's been outstanding this season."
If Fevola leaves the Navy Blues, just about every other team will want to, at least, be a part of the negotiating table, no matter how utterly ridiculous his price may be. How much will clubs be prepared to offer the big 'shag pile' for his services in-front of goal.
We know that he is an 80-goal-a-season player, having produced it last year, so he will be high on the list of many teams wanting to build a strong forwards setup. He did kick approximately 40 per cent of Carlton's goals in 2007.
Who knows what Fevola will do in 2009. But the one thing that is certain is that the other 15 clubs will offer more than a one-year deal to him.
