Fevola denies $3m Sydney offer
July 5th 2008 01:14
Carlton forward Brendan Fevola has been having a tumultuous time in recent weeks.
Not only is he sick of having to delay his contract negotiations, but the situation has gone sour with journalist Craig Hutchinson allegedly coming up with a story that he has been offered a lucrative contract by the Swans.
Fevola was dumbfounded when Hutchinson revealed in his weekly segment on The Footy Show that the forward had been approached by Sydney, and a four-year, $3 million contract put to him to make the move north.
"I'm not going to talk about my contract," Fevola said adamantly on the program. "I'm sick of talking about it...Carlton are sick of talking about it."
Sydney coach Paul Roos held a press conference to clear the air with the public, and hopefully put the matter to rest. He vehemently denied the allegations of an offer from his club.
“I haven’t spoken to Brendan. No one from the club (has spoken to Brendan), Andrew Ireland hasn’t spoken to Brendan,” said Roos.
“We haven’t made Brendan an offer. I’d expect him to sign with Carlton in the not-too-distant future. Why it comes up, and where it comes from, we’re a bit dumbfounded.”
“I spoke to (Brendan's manager and former player Alaistair Lynch) this morning and asked him where it’s coming from.
“He was a bit embarrassed as well. At the moment, we’re probably like all clubs: we expect him to sign with Carlton and we expect that to happen shortly.”
“Our expectation is that he’ll sign with Carlton. Now, if that was to change, then we’d sit down and talk as a footy club as to whether we believe that Brendan would fit into the club.
"Until that happens, it’s almost pointless discussing whether he comes, whether you’d want him to come."
“A type of player like Brendan has to decide: does he want to stay at Carlton or does he want to leave.
“If there was a problem with Brendan and the Carlton football club, and he did say that he didn’t want to be at the Carlton football club, then we would discuss him as a football club and if he was interested in coming here, and we were interested, we would then pursue it.
"At this stage, that hasn’t been discussed. We expect him to sign with Carlton.”
Is Craig Hutchinson putting his job as a respected journalist on the line, with such a big claim? Are both Sydney and Brendan Fevola trying to cover up the real truth, and have concocted a water-tight story? Is Fev trying to jack up the figure on the contract ala Jason Akermanis did only a few years ago by including Sydney in his bargaining chip?
All will soon be revealed.
