R16 Saturday Wash Up

July 21st 2008 00:59
Geelong def Western Bulldogs by 61 points.

In what was considered to be one of the games of the season turned out to be a fizzler, as the Cats cranked up another level and smashed the Western Bulldogs by over ten goals.

Missing both Gary Ablett and Cameron Ling to injuries, many believed that this was another good opportunity to hand the Cats their second loss of the season. And facing the team directly below them on the ladder, the chance couldn't have been more riper.

And the first half lived up to all expectations, with the teams going into the main break locked at 47 points apiece.

But it was another Geelong outfit that appeared after half-time, as they went to dominate the second half, kicking 13 goals to three for the remainder fo the match.

Darren Milburn and Matthew Scarlett picked up 32 possessions each, and Jimmy Bartel showed the form that led him to last year's Brownlow Medal with 31. Ryan Gambie kicked four goals, and both Steve Johnson and Cameron Mooney kicked three each.

As a collective unit, Geelong amassed more than 400 possessions for the fourth week in a row.

Richmond def Essendon by four points.

Richmond has overcome a spirited Essendon outfit to win by four points at the MCG.

Leading by four goals at half-time, the Tigers allowed the Bombers to kick six goals to one in the third term, turning a four-goal deficit into a two-goal lead at the break.

But with only a few minutes to go and trailling by nine points, Essendon let their hard work slip, as they kicked three behinds which cost them the game, and ended their four-game winning streak.

Nathan Foley was instrumental with 31 disposals and Nathan Brown, who got 24 touches and three goals. Mitch Morton kept up his newly-discovered form, with four goals to be Richmond's main goalkicker in the absence of Matthew Richardson.

As for the Bombers, Scoot Lucas was the main forward, kicking three. Brent Stanton had a superb match, getting 27 possessions, including three tackles and two goals.

Brisbane def West Coast by 46 points

Brisbane has snapped their two-game losing streak by defeating the West Coast Eagles by 46 points at the GABBA.

The Lions managed to kick eight unanswered goals to stretch a five-point lead in the second term, into a 53-point advantage midway through the third quarter.

Brisbane now join Collingwood on 36 points, only six points behind Sydney, who bet Carlton by two points yesterday.

Bradd Dalziell was the Lions' leading possession-getter with 32 touches, including five tackles. Luke Power got 31 and Simon Black 27. Daniel Bradshaw kept up his stellar season with another four goals, whilst his kicking partner Jonathan Brown got three majors.

Dean Cox was the best player for the Eagles, with 36 disposals, including 27 hitouts, dominating in the centre bounces. Cox was supported by Andrew Embley, who got 34 touches. Ashely Hansen and Quentin Lynch both kicked two goals for the visitors.

St. Kilda def Hawthorn by 30 points.

A six-goal performance by St. Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt has given the Saints a five-goal win over third-placed Hawthorn in the Blue Ribbon Cup at the Telstra Dome.

The win keep the Saints' slim hope of making the top four, and extends their winning streak to four matches, something the team has not done since late 2006.

Down at half-time by five goals, St. Kilda rallied and kicked 12 of the next 15 goals, to shut the Hawks out and concede the yellow and brown to their third loss of the year.

Nick Dal Santo topped the stats sheet for St. Kilda with 32 disposals and two goals. Leigh Montagna had 31 and veteran Robert Harvey had 29 touches. Jason Blake was Riewoldt's sidekick in front of the sticks, with three goals to go along with Riewoldt's six.

As for the Hawks, Lance Franklin, Jarrad Roughead and Mark Williams all kickd three goals each. Brad Sewell had 24 possessions and Luke Hodge 23 including two goals.

The 2008 season will be one to forget for both Melbourne and Fremantle, as they have won four games combined so far.

Melbourne have been decimated by injury and retirement, but have shown some decent form against Geelong, Hawthorn, Brisbane and Collingwood. They can also take heart that one of the teams they have defeated has been the Dockers.

Coming back from a 51-point half-time deficit, the Demons slowly eroded the margin and took the four points away from Fremantle. Austin Wonaeamirri was the catalyst for the win, with three last-quarter goals, to see his side take the four points away.

Freo's forward line has not been capable of kicking winning scores, even though Matthew Pavlich currently sits in third position on the Coleman Medal race. His partmer-in-crime in Chris Tarrant, has had his moments, but has been generally quiet.

The Dean Soloman incident will want to be forgotten as soon as possible, and the only way that this can happen is if Freo have a strong win.

One thing is for sure, whoever wins will go to 12 points on the AFL Ladder.

Showdown 25 is imminent, and both teams will be looking forward to renewing rivalries on Sunday.

Both teams have been struggling in the last month. Port have declared that they cannot make the Finals, whilst the Crows have lost their last four matches, and are slowly throwing away their blistering start to the season.

Without Jason Porplyzia and Brett Burton, it will be difficult to see where the Crows are going to get their goals from. A lot will be made - and expected - of Richard Douglas, who is a crumbing forward who has shown glimpses of brilliance this season. Kurt Tippett will also have to bear much of the forward thrust, and will need to show why he won a NAB Rising Star nomination.

Having returned from injury, Andrew McLeod will need to fire, along with his fellow midfielders, Simon Goodwin and Tyson Edwards. Port will want to shut these men down, but free up the Cornes brothers, Shaun Burgoyne and David Rodan.

How will Warren Tredrea go against a strong defensive Adelaide line? Can the Crows kick some goals? Can the Power win another match with the amount of youngsters they are blooding?

Both teams will want to win this week's match, as it will help to strengthen their September chances.

R16 Preview: St. Kilda vs Hawthorn

July 17th 2008 06:57
This match looks set to be another cracker, with a team that has been firing since Round One playing against another that has just started to look alive.

The Saints have won their last two matches, and defeated teams when the experts have commented about their season hanging in the balance. With forwards Justin Koschitkze, Nick Riewoldt and Stephen Milne firing in the last few weeks, it will be interesting to see which attack scores more, with the Hawks having Lance Franklin, Jarrad Roughead and Mark Williams unstoppable so far this season

Brisbane will be fired up for this game, as it has dropped points against teams it believed the victory should have been theirs.

Losing to Melbourne by a point and Essendon by 35 has made their top-four chances harder to achieve. They will not want to do the same this week, as they play a languishing West Coast at home, who are sitting 0.57 percentage points from last position

R16 Preview: Richmond vs Essendon

July 17th 2008 06:34
It was only a month ago that both teams held extremely slim hopes of making this year's Finals series. Now, both teams go into this weekend's clash with strong chances of September glory.

The Bombers are on a four-game winning streak, and are flying. Their youngsters are standing up, and the team is playing some attractive football. They will miss Andrew Lovett and Mark McVeigh, but will look to Leroy Jetta to once-again kick some much-needed goals

What can you say about this match, but we are going to be set for a Preliminary Final preview.

First plays second, and other than Hawthorn, no other team in the league can compare to the Cats and Bulldogs. Both teams have only lost two games and drawn once combined

This game could have a massive effect on how the final eight could shape up, with Collingwood currently sitting in fifth position, whilst the Kangaroos are just sitting out, hungrily pursuing the final place.

Both teams put on fiercely-contested clashes every time they meet, and something special happens. Last time, North kicked five goals in the final quarter after they were down at three-quarter time
